Forest & Mangroves Restoration
Restoring degraded forests and mangroves back to thriving ecosystems and habitats through Community-Public-Private-partnership.
We are losing forests faster than we are growing trees.
Although forests and mangroves are among the world's most valuable natural assets, these critical ecosystems are disappearing faster than they can recover. Every minute, the world loses nearly 11 football fields of tropical primary forest, while 75% of terrestrial ecosystems and 66% of marine environments have already been significantly altered by human activity. Restoring and protecting these ecosystems has never been more urgent.
At Green Generation Initiative, we work with communities, government, and the private sector to restore degraded forests and mangroves while building long-term stewardship that ensures these ecosystems continue to support both people and nature.
Our Restoration Targets
Each year, we aim to:
- Restore 1,000 hectares of degraded forests, with a focus on critical water catchments.
- Restore 3 kilometres of mangrove ecosystems along Kenya's estuaries and coastline.
- Empower more than 4,000 community members to become active stewards of forests and mangroves.
- Produce over 1 million indigenous tree seedlings and 300,000 mangrove seedlings to support large-scale restoration efforts.
Our Community-Led Restoration Model
We believe lasting restoration is only possible when local communities become custodians of the ecosystems they depend on.
Our approach is built on Community–Public–Private Partnerships (CPPPs) that bring together communities, government agencies, development partners, and the private sector to restore and sustainably manage forests and mangroves.
Central to this model is Participatory Forest Management (PFM), which enables communities and government institutions to share the responsibility, benefits, and long-term stewardship of forest resources.
GGI partners with businesses to adopt, restore, and steward forests and mangroves, helping them achieve their ESG, climate, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals. From restoration planning and implementation to monitoring and impact reporting, through our expert team and community partners GGI manages the entire restoration process, allowing organizations to generate lasting environmental value while focusing on their core business.
Science-Based Restoration Approaches
To improve survival rates, strengthen biodiversity, and build resilient ecosystems, we apply various restoration methods that are tailored to the ecological condition of each landscape. For terrestrial forest restoration, our restoration approaches include:
- Active tree planting
- Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR)
- Enrichment planting
- Agroforestry systems
- Trees Establishment and Livelihood Improvement Scheme (TELIS)
Our mangrove restoration strategy combines:
- Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR)
- Native mangrove species planting
- Community-led mangrove stewardship
- Habitat conservation
- Sustainable coastal resource management
Creating Value for People and Nature
Successful conservation depends on ensuring that communities benefit from healthy ecosystems.
GGI works to strengthen environmental stewardship by helping communities understand the economic, social, and ecological value of forests and mangroves, not only as habitats for biodiversity, but also as natural infrastructure that provides clean water, climate regulation, fertile soils, coastal protection, and sustainable livelihoods.
To support long-term conservation, we promote:
- Community–government partnerships for sustainable ecosystem management.
- Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) that reward communities for restoring and protecting natural resources.
- Climate-smart agriculture and environmental extension services that improve livelihoods while reducing pressure on forests.
- Carbon finance and other nature-based financing opportunities that generate sustainable income from ecosystem restoration.
- Environmental education and community awareness to cultivate lifelong stewardship of forests and coastal ecosystems.
Forest and Mangroves Benefit to people
With increasing anthropogenic activities that are a threat to forests and mangroves, GGI is focused on building environmental consciousness among local communities by not only ensuring communities are at the center of conservation, but also show-casing to them the cost-benefit analysis of forest and mangroves as supporting natural assets to the access of ecosystem services and what would be lost due to increased degradation.
To sustain community empowerment from forest and mangroves assets, GGI promotes:
- Facilitating community-government frameworks for long-term ecosystem management.
- Payment of ecosystem services for community livelihoods
- Environmental education and sustainable agro-production extension services to farmers as an incentive for their restoration efforts
- Carbon opportunities
Our Aim
We envision thriving forests and resilient mangrove ecosystems where biodiversity flourishes, communities prosper, and nature continues to provide the life-supporting ecosystem services upon which communities depend.
