Green Generation Initiative was founded in 2016 by Elizabeth Wathuti; a recipient of Wangari Maathai scholarship award, with an aim of addressing the global environmental challenges that she identified with since childhood such as deforestation, climate change, pollution and environmental injustices.

She has been passionate about the environment since childhood mostly because she was able to love and connect to nature at a young age. She planted her first tree at the age of 7 years in her home village where planting trees was a norm and was greatly inspired by the late professor Wangari Maathai.

“I often used to think to myself ‘Why not nurture and raise more young people to be conscious of the environment so that their collective action will help to address global environmental challenges?’. Afterall, there is a saying: “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” Our founder, Elizabeth Wathuti.

We are giving the young people and especially children a chance to learn by doing and an opportunity to love nature and co-create their future because we believe that you protect what you love. We are creating a nature first culture now for a sustainable future that works for us all and we want everyone to be mindful of how they will leave this planet for generations to come.

Green Generation Initiative focuses on nurturing young environmental enthusiasts through greening schools, environmental education, addressing food insecurity by planting fruit trees and establishing food forests as well as inculcating a tree growing culture among people for forest cover increment through adopt a tree campaign.

“Teaching conservation to the next generation is important as attitudes and change of behaviour towards the earth’s natural resources begin at an early age. Environmental awareness to children will lead them to be proactive adults concerned about the welfare of their environment and the world they live in. Having grown up understanding the value of nature, I am always conscious of my lifestyle in that I always try to ensure that I impact the environment positively,” Elizabeth Wathuti

We are committed to changing the mindset of the people towards environmental conservation. We are raising a generation of young, passionate environmentalists who will fight fearlessly to protect our environment. We envision a world where we can all live in harmony with nature without harming the planet.

A world where everybody is mindful of how they will leave the planet for generations to come. A world where we will put people and the planet before profits and a world where future generations will not have to suffer and deal with the consequences of environmental degradation caused by the previous generations
