About Green Generation Initiative

Green Generation Initiative is a non-profit youth led organization that is creating a generation of environmentally conscious individuals by educating and empowering children and communities to love nature.

We run programmes focused on tree growing to help communities implement nature-based solutions to the climate crisis, while simultaneously addressing food insecurity.

About Green Generation Initiative

Our History

Green Generation Initiative is a youth-led initiative that was founded in 2016 by Elizabeth Wathuti with a sole focus on addressing environmental issues through education, tree growing for impact, advocacy, and activism.

Elizabeth Wathuti (founder), a young Kenyan environmentalist and climate activist was the 4th recipient of the Wangari Maathai scholarship award through which she decided to focus on a solution to the climate and ecological crisis in her community. She had an opportunity to spend time out in nature with trees, bushes and clean streams that were flowing close to her homestead during her early years of age.

However, she also faced ecological grief witnessing that natural world that she knew together with her friends changing before her eyes and also learnt the art of turning her reactions and feelings into a hunger to want to do something about the challenges of deforestation and climate change. This led to the birth of the Green Generation Initiative which initially focused on planting trees in schools and engaging school children in the exercise.

The initiative has since expanded its focus to mentoring young children into being climate conscious, establishing food forests in school, carrying out environmental education to school children, planting trees for birthdays and special occasions, capacity building for communities, and creating awareness on climate change to the general public.

Through these activities, the initiative is now creating a generation of environmentally conscious individuals by nurturing young people to love nature through experiential learning and ground nature-based solutions.
